Doheny
Courtyard

Enter a world of timeless elegance,
luxury and old-world charm...

The Doheny Courtyard was constructed in the late 1930s.  The building is architecturally significant as an excellent example of the Streamline Moderne style.  It is historically significant as evidence of the development patterns that radically altered the Sunset Strip in the late 1930s and established the character it retains today.  These suites have been newly renovated and remodeled without compromising the distinctive historic integrity of the 30s and 40s.

The builders of the subject property were A. Markowitz and Sons.  Several members of the Markowitz family continued to own and reside at the property through 2001.  Markowitz was also responsible for developing or constructing other nearby apartment buildings, including the National Register-listed Sunset Tower (now the Argyle Hotel).  According to Daniel Markowitz, son of the original builder and previous owner of the property, an extraordinary succession of people from the Hollywood community resided in the building.  This list includes Eva Gardner, Mickey Rooney, Joseph Schildkraut, Vicente Minelli, Marie McDonald and Sidney Sheldon.
